The Turku Music Festival is blessed with superb concert venues in the city's wonderful concert halls, churches and castle.

The astounding Sigyn Hall near the Aura River is an excellent spot for chamber music and virtuoso solo performances. The beautiful Academy Hall is ideal for baroque music and the adjacent Cathedral is the place to be for performances of Mozart's Symphony and the masterpieces of J. S. Bach played by candle light.

Turku Music Festival provides orchestral music, premieres, young soloists, concerts for children, free admission events in galleries and business premises, film series and other attractions.

TURKU MUSIC FESTIVAL - OLD AND NEW

Turku was one of the first Finnish cities to hold a music festival on a modern scale. There were eager people to organise it in the Musical Society of Turku., and good concert venues across the city. The Turku Music Festival was founded by The Musical Society of Turku in 1960 and the Society was responsible for arranging the Festival until 1971. From 1972 to 1989 the Festival came under jurisdiction of the City of Turku Music Board, after which it was transferred to the Foundation of Turku Music Festival established expressly for it. The Foundation appointed Olli Mustonen the pianist as the Festival's figurehead. Since 1993 the post of the Artistic Director has been held by Martti Rousi the cellist.

Turku with its numerous different concert venues offers infinite potential to have more scope than other cities for choosing a hall that does maximum justice to the concert in question. The staple diet of the Turku Music Festival has always consisted of orchestral and chamber concerts and recitals. The performance of early music on authentic instruments became an important item on the programme of the Turku Music Festival, to which early music enthusiasts now make an annual "pilgrimage".

In the past few years the Turku Music Festival has featured a large number of young musicians, thereby providing them with challenging opportunity to appear as equals alongside other artists.

The Turku Music Festival is one of the oldest summer cultural events in Finland. This does not mean that it is in any way ailing, since the artistic substance is constantly fresh and ready to explore new avenues. Another major factor has been the youthful look of the Festival created by the paintings on musical themes bursting with positive energy by the Turku artist Markku Kosonen.

Alarik Repo, Executive Director
